Sharon Baptist Church was organized in September 1867 under the leadership of Rev.  H. Johnson of Boston, Massachusetts with a few members who had previously been allowed to worship once a month with Hunting Creek Baptist Church.  The first building was a small log cabin, built on the site where the church cemetery is now located.  This land was purchased from Mr. Roland Turpin.  The Sharon Baptist Church membership has had twenty-two (22) pastors since its inception.  In the last 25 years, the membership has been led by the following:

 

  • Rev. C. P. Johnson: 1985 - 1987

  • Rev. Charles Calloway: 1988 - 1989

  • Rev. Timothy Horton, interim, September 1993 - February 1994, Pastor  March 1994 - 1996

  • Rev. Mark Stallings: 1997 - 2001

  • Rev. Garrett (Gary) Harmon: 2002 -  2004

  • Rev. Dennis W. Moody: 2006 -  present

 

Under the leadership of all former and present men of God, Sharon Baptist Church has grown physically and spiritually.

 

  • The land where the present structure was built was purchased during the administration of Rev. T. P. Johnson.

  • In 1934, the structure was completed under the administration of Rev. C. Jones.

  • In addition to purchasing the Sharon School, worship service increased to every Sunday under the administration of Rev. E. R. Wilson.

  • Multiple renovations have occurred through the years, including the complete renovation of the Sharon School.

  • The Christian Education and Out Reach Ministries were formed under the administration of Rev. Mark Stallings.

 

Sharon Baptist Church has produced several ministers of the word.  

 

  • In 2002, Rev. Anita Wright was licensed as the first female minister of Sharon.  

  • Rev. Mark McCoy, Sr. and Rev. Judy Watkins were licensed in 2004.  

  • Our youngest warrior, Rev. Lewis Greene, was licensed in 2008.   Most recently,

  • Rev. Lola Reynolds was licensed in 2009.

 

Our current Pastor, Dennis W. Moody, became the twenty-second pastor of Sharon Baptist Church in 2006.  The church has continued to grow under his leadership.

 

  • Since becoming Pastor, Rev. Moody has identified the church as Sharon Missionary Baptist Church (SMBC)

  • He has emphasized the importance of being biblically sound.  This has resulted in the members of SMBC not only attending the Baptist Sunday School and Baptist Training Union Congress of Virginia, but also, members holding positions in the BTU Congress.

  • Under Rev. Moody's advisement and encouragement, the Christian Education Ministry has begun to provided more opportunities and activities that foster spiritiual and social growth among our Church family.

  • A Minister of Music was appointed for the first time in the history of Sharon in 2008.

  • Formation of the Sharon Mass Choir, 2008.

  • Formation of the Boys to Men Ministry.

  • Development of the Media Ministry, including Facebook and a presence on the World Wide Web (WWW).

  • Formation of the Sisters of Sharon.

  • Formation of the Nursery Ministry.

  • Over the past five years, Sharon has been blessed to have many improvements made to the physical building, grounds, and cemetery under the leadership of the Trustees. Completion of the Sharon Fellowship Hall.

  • Establishment of a Health ministry.

 

Sharon Missionary Baptist Church has been richly blessed both spiritually and physically down through the years and with the continued blessings of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, we will continue to be a church that is Bible-based, Christ-centered, and Spiritfilled throughout the twenty-first century and beyond.  A detailed history is available by contacting the church office.
