Sharon Baptist Church was founded in September 1867 by Rev. H. Johnson with a small group of members who had been worshipping monthly with Hunting Creek Baptist Church. The first building was a log cabin located on what is now the church cemetery, purchased from Mr. Roland Turpin. Since its beginning, the church has had twenty-two pastors. With Dr. Johnson becoming its twenty-third. Under the leadership of Rev. Dennis W. Moody, Sharon was renamed Sharon Missionary Baptist Church (SMBC).
The church building was completed in 1934 and has seen many renovations, including the full renovation of Sharon School and the introduction of Sunday services every week. Rev. Mark Stallings helped form the Christian Education and Outreach Ministries. The church has also licensed several ministers, including its first female minister, Rev. Anita Wright, in 2002.
Many new ministries and activities were developed under Rev. Moody, such as the Sharon Mass Choir, Boys to Men Ministry, Media Ministry, and Health Ministry. Within the last five years, the church has made numerous improvements to its facilities. Sharon Missionary Baptist Church continues to thrive spiritually and physically, aiming to be a Bible-based and Christ-centered community for the future.
Today the church has embraced modern communication methods, establishing a presence on social media and the internet. It has also seen infrastructural improvements, such as the completion of the Sharon Fellowship Hall and the establishment of a Health Ministry.
SMBC continues to thrive as a Bible-based, Christ-centered, and Spirit-filled community, deeply rooted in its historic mission and looking forward to a vibrant future.
